Book - Roadmap To Export Success

How can I bring in temporary imports for repair, alteration, or processing without paying a duty?

If you are temporarily importing goods to be repaired, altered or processed in the U.S. within 1 year and exported, you will have to file a Temporary Importation under Bond entry. Heading 9813.00.05 in the harmonized tariff schedule allows goods to enter the U.S. for these reasons without duty being required. However, the importer must obtain a Customs bond from a surety company. A list of surety companies can be obtained on the Treasury's Financial Management Service's Web site at www.fms.treas.gov - the list is identified as Circular 570. If the importer wants to hire a Customs broker to file the TIB and obtain the bond on their behalf, a list of Customs brokers can be obtained under the “ports” section of this site. Otherwise, the importer will have to submit the bond and entry documents specified in our publication Importing into the United States. Customs requires entry to be filed within 15 working days of the goods arrival for Customs clearance, however, we advise the importer or broker to file the entry within 5 days to avoid being charged storage fees by the carrier. If the goods are not cleared within 15 days, the goods will be sent to a General Order Warehouse (GO), unless Customs grants the importer an extension. If the goods remain in GO for 6 months, they will be auctioned off. For additional information, please see our publication Temporary Importation Under Bond.
